The Fortunes of Fifi

The Fortunes of Fifi

🎞️ Movie 50 min --
1917

In Napoleonic France, petite actress Marguerite Clark (as Fifi) falls in love with fatherly mentor William Sorelle (as Cartouche). Due to their age difference, he decides against holy matrimony. She's supposed to be a teenager. When Clark, becoming a successful stage star and socialite, is pursued by nefarious Jean Del Val (as Louis Bourcet), forces in Heaven and Earth must intercede... "The Fortunes of Fifi" was adapted from the book by Molly Elliot Seawell, which can be read online. That illustrated text, surviving still photographs from the film, and the "Famous Players" production team suggest "Fifi" was a good follow-up to Clark's successful "Snow White" (1916). While a movie superstar from 1914-1921, who retired on top, few of Clark's films survived the ages."Photoplay" (May 1917) writer Julian Johnson wrote Fifi was "another pretty little conceit out of which Marguerite Clark pops like a plum from a Christmas pie. It is the tales of a little dancer, first of a provincial theatrical troupe and later of the great theaters of Paris under the patronage of Napoleon I. There is much atmosphere, and many touches of old-world quaintness and eternal humanity." ***** The Fortunes of Fifi (2/26/17) Robert G. Vignola ~ Marguerite Clark, William Sorelle, Jean Del Val, Kate Lester
