The Bashful Elephant

Set in a traveling circus in modern (1962) Austria, the story centers around Tristie (Molly Mack), a 12-year-old escapee from behind the Iron Curtain, who is hunted by the law, rescued by a giant border dog and 'adopted' by an elephant.
