Clare's father was a producer of dogoil, a medicine extracted from dead dogs, which is supposed to cure all ailments. Her mother had a studio where ladies in need had a certain operation made. As an old lady, Calre visits her father's factory which has been shut down long ago. There Clare thinks about her childhood.
