The film starts with an American man of Okinawan descent arriving in Okinawa to meet his maternal grandmother for the first time. The Grandmother eventually tells him the story of the Okinawan people who sheltered in caves during the war. GAMA means cave in Okinawan dialect. The film highlights tensions between mainland Japanese and Ryukyu people which are still relevant today.
