People could read newspapers, but the images projected onto the theater screens. were a big plus. The rise of radio was no barrier, and with the coming of sound, the newsreel companies often hired the people who read the radio news. The newsreels offered major events with an immediacy unmatched by other media. It took the rise of television to put a crimp in newsreels, and the companies began to consolidate and close. By the middle of the 1960s, they were gone.The gags on offer here are not terribly sharp.
