In medieval times: Katharina, a farmers wife, looses her family to the plague. In her desperation she begins a relationship with her maidservant Anna. The become lovers. The village - and especially the menial Franz who would like to marry Katharina to inherit the farm - stigmatizes her into a witch and kills her. Anna who has become a traitor to Katharina, marries Franz.
