Hard to make a case for this creaky Australian silent movie, fielding long forgotten talents in a plot that's no more far fetched than the Hollywood or European melodramas of the day but lacks their polish and audience appeal. The lead longs for the high life and passes himself off as his nasty brother (cf. Guitry's VIE D'UN HONNETE HOMME for one). Scenes of Sydney society life are contrasted with the squalid country gin mill of the opening and tearful complications follow. The glimpses of contemporary Sydney are less than compelling. The performers lack appeal or presence and the film making is lumpen and full of mistakes - flashes on camera effects, double actions in the edits. This is an ugly film.Cameraman Tas Higgins who provided a few moments of interest in the better known THE SENTIMENTAL BLOKE, is called on to produce fades and superimpositions, none of which are as effective as picturing the heroine's face in the cabbage in BLOKE.
