Chloe is about the gradual breakdown of a mother/daughter relationship due to non-communication. This lack of communication stems from the mother not telling Chloe about her grandfather's illness. By hiding this from her daughter, Denise feels that she is protecting Chloe from the harsh realities of life. And in turn Chloe never vocalizes her true feelings about how her mother makes her feel about her looks.
