Losing all their possessions in a scam pulled off by a wandering merchant, Chun-ho and his wife are forced to go from village to village begging for food. They are able to at last settle down in one small town controlled by Mr Lee. Gambling is rampant there and Chun-ho offers his wife to Lee as collateral in order to borrow enough money from Lee for one, high-stakes card game
