Roger Daubry and Suzanne de Sternay love each other but one day Grand-ma Adelaîde Sternay tells Suzanne that she cannot marry Roger. She writes M. Daubry, Roger's uncle, to ask him to take his nephew away, which he does. The grand-mother then explains Suzanne why she did that: when she was her age, she had loved M. Daubry but Adélaïde had objected so he had left. When he returned, Adélaïde was married to Sternay. And one day she was saying goodbye to Daubry, her husband had surprised them. There was a duel and M. de Sternay was killed. That's why she thought she couldn't marry her grand-father's murderer. In the end, they accept their union.
