In 1855 cavalryman John Rayverne returns from the Crimean War intent on marrying his childhood sweetheart Katherine. But her father expects a marriage to Dedrick Hulbert, a renowned marksman. When Hulbert discovers Katherine and John's secret love he challenges John to a duel. A contest John cannot possibly win.
