In the near future, society is divided into two parts: the Alphas are the ruling elite, while the Betas are the computer-controlled worker drones. Dr. Alan Cooper is an Alpha psychosurgeon in charge of implanting the controlling chips into Beta test subjects. But his life changes one day when his latest subject turns out to be Arlo Visner, his childhood friend, who has an unexpected violent reaction to the Beta conversion process.
