Scenes and interviews of recent Jewish emigres from the Soviet Union, on their way across Europe to Israel, are interspersed with vivid flashbacks of the whole of Russian-Jewish history. A living connection is thus established between the present-day drama of Soviet Jewry and its rich, often somber past. Fine editing and a moving narration by Theodore Bikel make for a strong film experience. The film calls for a response to "the challenge given our generation."
