Elysium explores the triumph of the resiliency of the human spirit's ability to heal itself when all external mechanisms have failed. In the film we follow Calvin in his depression which brings him to the edge of reason which nearly results in his taking of his own life. Before he can his conscience, Jack, manages to arrange a meeting with Calvin face to face. In their confrontation Jack explains Calvin's life as a game of chess and introduces him to his life as Jack sees it.
