Down-and-out photographer Vaughan Edwards ends up with the responsibility of caring for his niece following the untimely death of his sister. Never having been the fatherly type, Vaughan tries to accommodate Kaya's vibrant personality but ultimately seeks a way out of his new role. He contacts Janet, his sister's former best friend and Kaya's birth mother. When Vaughan is able to convince her to come and meet the child, he knows that his freedom is not far away. However, he also realizes that this may not be as good an outcome as he thought.
