The time is around 1890. In Europe women are still dominated by their men; women can't vote. But Darwin has finally undermined the faithful by demonstrating the origin of our species, both men and women. Mrs Alving, a modern woman, attempts to leave her past behind and start again. However the path of self discovery is long and tortuous and leads her into byways unsuspected.
