Underground: Letter from an Immigrant

🎞️ Movie 8 min --
2003

When the video-maker found himself traveling from one end of London to the other, day after day, he began carrying a video camera to record his impressions. As time passed the underground became a visual metaphor for his isolation and insecurity. Another layer: a Gypsy accordionist who contributes a bittersweet letter to his mother and a melancholic waltz. These are interwoven with excerpts from Will Self's piece, 'Big Dome,' and layers of music and sound. Together they build an uneasy feeling of claustrophobia and alienation, finally countered by the Gypsy's classic immigrant attitude: brave optimism.
