Gontran's friend Soupirol advises him to ask for Miss Poupinel's hand in marriage because she is a charming girl with a dowry. Gontran shaves and goes to the Poupinel's. Unfortunately, on that day, they expect a new valet. So Gontran is given a broom and, thinking this is some kind of a test, he agrees to clean and Mr. and Mrs. Poupinel are quite pleased with their new help. As he is pouring tea, Gontran sees someone kissing the girl he wanted and drops his plater in shock. 'After all I've done, may I marry your daughter now?' he asks. But Mrs. Poupinel has already chosen another man, but since Gontran was such a good servant, they offer him a job instead.
