Five characters tell us their stories; their lives, jobs, problems, dreams and their solution to it all- the walls of the local osteria. Here our protagonists try to slow down the forever turning, scornful wheel of Fortune with a glass of wine or a beer, or a game of the cathartic Passatella; an ancient drinking game that gives the patrunu or 'master of the wine' the opportunity to take revenge for a past wrong that has been suffered. 'The Last Osteria' is a documentary about a meeting place that resists the wear and tear of time and a ritual that has remained common place. It is a place where you can meet a vagrant, waiting for a special favor from his friend the deputy-mayor, or the part-time greengrocer who can't live without the sea. The head teacher disenchanted with the left wing party that keeps being 'sliced' over and over, 'like a salami', and a man still waiting to see his 20 years of work in Switzerland recognised by a pension plan: 'And all because of the historical neutrality of the Swiss Confederation', he exclaims. In this touching portrait of a microcosm dominated by male figures Alfredo De Giuseppe gives an original and true picture of southern Italy.
