The Unnameable is an 11 minute artists' film trading in popular culture, sci-fi and horror. Gaffney's performance as the Boy is often a deadpanned, mime-like mask for the psychological episode of dissociation. A motif that is concentrated on throughout the film is the double; seen through shadows, reflections and finally in the distorted plastic face of the boy's twin. The title is a reference to both H.P Lovecraft and Samuel Beckett's 'Unnamables,' stories that melt in and out of reality and psychosis. Their characters fear what they know and what eludes them. The Unnameable was filmed on location in France and in an abandoned nursery for disabled children in London.
