Rhythm, a 10 year-old half Japanese girl, is paid a visit by her grandfather and family from Japan. They haven't seen each other since birth. She feels awkward and distant. As a gift her grandfather brings her a karakuri ningyo, a traditional Japanese doll, for her to construct. Having many intricate pieces, assembling the doll proves to be a complicated project and becomes over whelming for Rhythm. More and more she feels invaded by these strangers, whom are supposed to be family. As she eludes her grandfather, the family questions her demeanor. She retreats back to her bedroom to find a half built doll. Rhythm and her grandfather awkwardly attempt to create a relationship through this little doll.
