On a depression-era farm, a poor white family discovers a wounded black man and takes him in. They rush to discover who he is, why he has a gun, and whether to listen to the world or their hearts. The Hayes family lives on a farm in depression-era upstate New York where 10-year-old Aaron passes imagining the world outside. Aaron is walking home with his father and their sole possession: a horse named Jesse. Aaron spots a black man lying unconscious on their porch, and they discover the man is being chased by a vengeful policeman. Finding out why and reacting to the misinformation that darkened a period in our nation's history colors this black and white drama.
