Set in 1896, the first scene involves Patricia, who attempts to sneak away from Ellis, who has fallen asleep. As she attempts to flee, she runs into Arwine. Realizing she has no chance to escape, she folds amid the tension with Arwine. Arwine, Patricia, and Ellis then come upon Lyman, a black man on the trail. Arwine allows Patricia to leave with Lyman. Once they are alone, Patricia convinces Lyman to help her escape Arwine. Arwine and Ellis expect Patricia to try to run and eventually track down Patricia and Lyman. Lyman stands up to the men while Patricia runs. Despite Lyman telling Arwine he is not as bad as he thinks he is, Arwine and Ellis kill Lyman. They split up to find Patricia. Arwine finds her first and confronts her about miscarrying their baby. Arwine is enraged and blames Patricia for losing their child. Arwine becomes more aggressive until Patricia strikes him in the head with a rock and then beats him until he is dead.
