The Man Who Faced Death

🎞️ Movie --

Part-detective, part-artist, enigmatic genius and complete maverick, Frank Bender discovered his unusual life calling on a chance visit to the city morgue to learn more about anatomy while he was a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. When faced with a partially decomposed skull, he felt confident that he could reconstruct the unidentified woman's face and set about sculpting a clay bust. Thanks to this sculpture, done entirely on his own initiative and with no training in forensic science, the woman was identified, and her killer was brought to justice. What started out as a lark quickly turned into a lifelong passion. Over the years, Frank was sought after by the FBI, Scotland Yard and Interpol. Frank was responsible for helping bring a number of killers to justice, including John List, a New Jersey accountant who was on the FBI's Most Wanted List for killing his entire family. Working with 'America's Most Wanted', he studied photographs of the 41 year-old List, who had disappeared shortly after being charged in 1971. Frank imagined how he might look 18 years later in 1989, his face sagging with time and mouth turned down from anxiety. He theorized that Mr. List would still be wearing horn-rimmed glasses to make him appear astute and successful. Eleven days after Fox televised the sculpture on its segment, List was identified and finally brought to justice. The comparisons between Frank's busts and the people he has identified - which include accurate hair color, hairstyle and facial expression - defy scientific explanation. It is this leap into the unknown that makes Frank something more than an eccentric artist. The Recomposer of the Decomposed follows Frank as he struggles to complete his last sculpture while living with terminal cancer. It is the story of how one man turned his artistic gifts into a humanitarian mission. On December 30th, 2001, the remains of a young woman were found outside Easton, Pennsylvania. With no clue to her identity, the trail quickly went cold. Before he died, Frank completed his last case - a facial reconstruction of a woman and held a press conference which received national broadcast coverage. We also created the website, www.solvethiscoldcase.com with information about the case of 'The Woman in the Woods', photos of the bust, evidence from the crime scene and contact information for the law enforcement officers working on the case. It is our hope that our documentary will gain exposure for Frank's last case and help accomplish his greatest wish - to solve one last mystery and bring peace and perhaps justice to one more victim's family.
