Eels are seriously threatened. The European eel stock is down to only a few percent of what it was. With the exception of certain professional fishermen and specific waters, eel fishing is forbidden in Sweden. Despite this the number of eels is diminishing. Whilst fishing is forbidden, hundreds of thousands of eels meet a cruel death when they are ground up in power plant turbines to no purpose.
