Lonely old Russian, Viktor Korovin, wiles away his retirement in a country village drinking at the local pub and playing chess. When a stranger offers to play a chess match for a serious sum of money, a deadly game of cat-and-mouse is set in motion. The game brings Viktor's past back to haunt him in a story of guilt, revenge and ultimate reckoning.
