In Farewell Old Lady, filmmaker Denise Ward-Brown interweaves video and stills of an Ashanti funeral in Ghana. At this daylong ceremony, family, friends and members of the community gather to view the body of the deceased for the last time. Symbolic gestures of goodbye include lively market women reenacting bargaining for plantain, family and friends dancing, singing praise songs and tearfully saying goodbye. This visually rich documentary follows the rise and fall of emotions echoed by the sounds of clanging bells, drums, cries of mourning, and the laughter of celebration and remembrance.
