Americana Noir Vignettes are 4 short stories that revolve around the home of the Madison family in Chicago during the year 1968 Vignette #1: 'The Recipe'. Thirteen year old Lydia Madison's namesake Aunt Lydia arrives from Mississippi to Chicago in 1968. Resentful because she has to share her room, Lydia decides to prove that her aunt's wonderful cookies are not so special, but instead receives a valuable life lesson. Vignette #4: 'Dreams. When their oldest son Andre is told by his teacher that being an astronaut is unrealistic, Joanne and Robert Madison argue about how to handle the situation.
