Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, however, they are also one of the most vulnerable to over-exploitation and destructive fishing practices. In East Africa, along the coast of Kenya, communities are highly dependent upon coral reefs for food and livelihood, and as a result, fishing is one of the main activities. This has resulted in increasingly degraded coral reefs, where very few fish remain and sea urchins take over. This process is being reversed through joint initiatives between fishermen and other community members and has resulted in a movement for the establishment of community-managed areas closed to fishing, locally called 'tengefu'. This is a short film about marine conservation in Kenya, and the struggle between fishermen saving the ocean or saving their livelihood.
