The board of the Historical Cultural Association, chaired by Georg Karlin, commissions PhD Literberg and his amanuensis Knatte to go to South America to collect ethnographic stuff. When they are sleeping at the top of a hill, some Indians capture them and tie Literberg to a tree. The Indians find liquors in the luggage. After drinking it they fall asleep. The chief's daughter, The Bursting Bud, falls in love with Knatte. They sneak away from the sleeping tribe and flee to the university town Lund in Sweden. When the Indians wake, they untie Literberg and, led by him, follow the fleeing couple to Lund. When they arrive to the railway station in Lund, the Indians are met in a celebratory way by the student union. By smelling at the ground, the Indians find out that the fleeing couple has followed the railway track to Bjerred. There the Indians capture Knatte, tie him to a pole, and tell him to choose between marrying The Bursting Bud or die. Knatte chooses marriage, but when the Indians step into a small boat and start rowing to South America, Knatte flees back to Lund.
