'Red carpet' is a performance-for-video, filmed by the artist unaccompanied, that follows a glamorous female figure teetering down a red carpet. Seemingly endless, the carpet cuts its way through natural landscape settings (all shot in and around the Kitchener/Waterloo area.) Humorously unfettered by the obstacles in her way, we witness her tripping over uneven surfaces, navigating through trees and dense grasses, plunging through a river crossing, maintaining equilibrium on a carpeted log, baring skin bitten by snow and ice, careening down a deep snowy slope, mounting sand dunes and finally disappearing into the waves. 'Red carpet' questions but also pays homage to our expectations of tropes, myth, and representations of the female heroine and her relationship to nature, image and the big screen.
