Eight-year-old Charlie begins to suspect that Ernie, the odd neighborhood handyman, might have super powers when he lifts a car off Charlie's mischievous buddy Billy - all by himself! Charlie spies on Ernie in order to prove he is a superhero. As his curiosity grows, Charlie forms a tenuous friendship with socially stunted Ernie that reinforces Charlie's belief that Ernie may have super human abilities. Jealous of Charlie's new friendship with Ernie and eager for tangible proof that Ernie is what Charlie says, Billy comes up with a plan that has dire consequences.
