The film puts the viewer into the world of an old woman, living alone in an apartment in Eastern Europe, where it seems that time has stood still. The woman is busy in the house, and her only escape from the harsh reality are memories of her youth with her sister - playing at home, studying piano, and dreams to win together in the spotlights. All of these were curtailed during the Holocaust. Memories flood her, until she is carried away and abandons the housework. The reality is replaced by fantasies about what was and what could have been.
