Similar to many other rural Chinese children, Xin Tang is left behind with her grandmother at their hometown while her mother makes a living in a faraway city. She sees her mother infrequently, only once every one or two years. Her grandmother care for her and cooks for her, and she does have friends to play with. On the surface, everything seems is fine. But when she is alone, as she misses her mother dearly, she cries and sings to herself. By chance, she receives an opportunity to join a choir of 'Left Behind Children.' As a result, she gets to spends time with her mother for a brief period, but she become more depressed afterward.
