Missouri, 1864. The last months of the Civil War. Samuel, already a veteran of the old days, lost his wife Rachel during a northern raid. He's been protecting his only son ever since, a mentally challenged young man named Caleb. Their lives are interrupted by the arrival of McDouglas, Rachel's brother. A former friend turned confederate soldier, his mission is to enroll Caleb in the army.
