Jaanipaev or St. John's Day is an especially meaningful holiday for the people of Estonia. Between June 23 and 24, when the cold darkness of winter has passed, and when night appears to be non-existent, the people gather together to celebrate the light. Many of the ancient Estonian folk traditions and rituals practiced at this time of year have been preserved and passed down through the generations, and in many parts of Estonia they are still performed today.
