The United States Civil War was arguably one of the most defining moments in the history of the country. Between 1861 and 1865 approximately 620,000 Americans died fighting for a freedom that each side felt they were entitled to.The war ended 150 years ago, but there is a significant subculture of enthusiasts who reenact the battles. Our Project aims to capture the culture of reenactors, focusing on four subjects across the country. We are filming them in their homes and on the battlefield. When to Die is meant to capture the divisiveness of the Civil War by highlighting some themes that were just as prevalent in 1864 as in 2014. We want to capture race, politics, attitudes toward government and issues of economy.
