The film opens with Justin and his best friend, Alison, eating lunch and discussing Justin's new crush, Erica. Justin wants Alison to talk to Erica about what kind of guy she likes. After some resistance, Alison complies and discovers that Erica's into musicians. Justin, who can't play any instruments, teams up with Alison and a deaf boy named Max to form Justin and the Lovesick Idiots, an awful band that is frequently mocked by Justin's sister, Casey. All of the efforts fail, as Erica is more interested in Alison than Justin. The film closes with Justin overhearing two girls talking about how no girl would ever date a guy who wasn't a jock. Having learned nothing, Justin follows them to hear more.
