Water City, Berkeley

2014

Water City, Berkeley, by acclaimed artist Kim Anno, is an experimental, painterly, cinematic split screen film that imagines life after rising sea levels have fundamentally shifted the local landscape. In this new, watery world, young people, queer people, office workers and artists continue to play music, dance, invent new sports and games, read poetry, share meals as the rising seas forever alter their lives. The film is cinematically luscious and haunting and leaves the viewer speculating on choices to make regarding the mitigation of climate change. Dancers Jose Navarrete and Debby Kajiyama and Northgate High cheerleaders among others are choreographed by KT Nelson of Oberlin Dance fame with music by David Coll, and sfSound Group and Dan Carbone and The Kingdom of Not Band.
