A star ship pilot who taxis people from world to world finds himself deeply unhappy and very alone despite the fact that his job is secure and stable. He eventually meets traveling adventurers escorting a prisoner to a space station who challenge his life, what he wants from it, and the risks he is willing to take to get it.
