An unnamed protagonist falls in love with a woman whom he believes has been murdered, and though he cuts her up to dispose of the body, she continues to reappear as his world becomes more fractured and chaotic. He attempts to find her murderer(s) by tracking down a junkie linguist who has disappeared. Ultimately, he is led to believe that aliens from the future have come back in time to San Francisco in order to control human language.
