Lamentos no Morro

2014

Being poor is never easy and in Rio de Janeiro the problem is compounded by the curious who want to see your fantastic views and those who ask, 'why do you live like this?' By asking residents of Babilonia in the hillside of Rio to recite the poem, 'Monologue of Orpheus' by Vinicius de Moraes, we visit their homes and see locations not filmed since 'Black Orpheus' was shot in this community. We see the ordinary lives of people who are seen in the media as representing all that is wrong with being poor and struggling. With an original music score guiding the pacing of the film, and through their untrained voices, we see how in each of use beats the heart of a poet.
