Wendy Pye's short film 'Six Feet from the Edge' explores the subtle interplay between people and one of the Britain's most dramatic and infamous cliff edges, Beachy Head. Lone individuals and groups of figures move through the frame; day-trippers and hikers look out from the precipitous vantage point, surveying the sea and surrounding downs of this well-known beauty spot. The space between land and sea, earth and water, is a transitional zone demarcated by the abrupt land's end, and is a literal and metaphorical dropping-off point. In 'Six Feet from the Edge', Pye contemplates the effect on the emotions and behaviour of individuals visiting the area: in so doing, she taps into the histories and memories embedded within this stunning, but deadly, cliff face.
