'After the Curtain' is an intimate portrait of women who choose dance in the face of social stigma. In largely Muslim Post-Soviet Tajikistan a single mom supports her family by performing in restaurants; the first Tajik ballerina since the civil war takes the stage to rebuild her state ballet; a retired dancer worries about the place of dance in Islam; and a dancer who left for the U.S. returns home for her final concert. Also a meditation on intercultural experience, this moving tribute to the dancers' love of their art presents a largely unknown but rich national dance culture through original choreography and music performances.
