Watching Country

Watching Country details the heart wrenching life of Veronica Stabler aka 'Country', a single mother who worked as a prostitute in order to provide food and shelter for her toddler daughter. After being released from jail in early 2012, Veronica Stabler lived on the streets with her toddler daughter for three months before caving into the pressures of selling her body in exchange for money and shelter. For protection she joined 'The Rack' a dangerous prostitution syndicate that earned federal scrutiny after several murders occurred in an area their members frequent. With FBI cameras inserted within the rooms of a local motel that serves as the gang's hub, we're able to see a day in Country's life: From the time a social services worker attempts to extort her for $10,000 in exchange for not taking away custody of her daughter, to a sudden rape by a familiar client, to her most darkest hour as she's forced to service a 'john' while her toddler daughter sits five feet away on the bathroom floor. It was troubling for me to witness this woman engage in intercourse with a man and hear within an earshot her daughter's cry for attention. Unfortunately for Country, she falls victim to a Federal sting operation conducted by the FBI in the spring of 2013 and with the other members of 'The Rack' she gets convicted to serve a 25 years to life sentence.
