In a small town in southwestern Virginia, Ben Bennet, a successful but proud lawyer, rejects love and pursues financial gain as the path to happiness. His best friend, Jane Gardiner, is secretly in love with him, but realizes Ben can never return her affection. Jane feels nothing for the men who make it past the checklist Ben encourages her to follow. When free-spirited naturalist, Chuck Bingley, brings a darkly handsome Lee Darcy to a party at Ben's house, Ben recognizes Lee as the brooding factory worker Ben saw plead guilty to a felony a few months earlier. Soon, everyone must confront their prejudices as unexpected love wreaks havoc.
