Believing she is dying, a young woman packs up all of her possessions and gives them away to strangers who arrive at her front door. Her relinquishment of her belongings is likened to her natural mother's relinquishment of her as an infant and the problems of establishing both a viable identity and a meaningful existence in a circumstance defined by material plenitude but historical disconnect.
