Nathan is a friendless 10-year-old boy and faces abuse and neglect from his family. Nathan lives mainly within his imagination until he meets a little girl, Emily, in the woods near his house. With dream of flying away to a better place, they begin building a toy plane to live out the fantasy; but Emily has bigger plans.
