Aracely was married at eleven to a thirty four year old man. She bore him a son when she was 14. Nearly one third of all girls in Guatemala will be married before they turn eighteen. In fact, it is legal there for a girl to marry as young as fourteen, though many, like Aracely, are married far younger than that. The result is that many girls halt their education while still in elementary school, marry men far older than themselves and become mothers long before they are physically and emotionally ready.
