Shwebontha

The signboard builders of Shwebontha Street in Yangon, Burma prompt a search for the sonic and visual traces of its recent transition from a military state to capitalism. From the Kachin Independence Army - a rebel army founded in response to the 1961 military coup - to the Southeast Asian Games - a neocolonial cultural production funded by China - Shwebontha is a semiotic portrait of a country in transition.
